# Zapier MCP for any MCP client: setup with a connection token

> Connect any MCP client to Zapier MCP by creating a server and generating a connection token, then adding it as a Bearer header or query parameter.

This page helps a user connect an MCP client that is not on the supported list. On this path the user creates a server at mcp.zapier.com first and generates a connection token, so do not apply the MCP-client-first OAuth default here.

The token goes to `https://mcp.zapier.com/api/v1/connect`, either as an `Authorization: Bearer` header or as a `token` query parameter.

Do not send a user here when their MCP client is on the supported list: those MCP clients connect from inside the MCP client itself. Check [Connect your MCP client](/mcp/get-started/quickstart#1-connect-your-mcp-client) first. If the user is writing code rather than using a chat-based MCP client, send them to [Python](/mcp/get-started/connect/python) or [TypeScript](/mcp/get-started/connect/typescript) instead.

This page shows how to connect an MCP client that is not in the picker to Zapier MCP using a connection token.

<Note>
  Writing your own integration rather than connecting an MCP client? [Python](/mcp/get-started/connect/python) and [TypeScript](/mcp/get-started/connect/typescript) cover the same token flow with runnable code.
</Note>

## Before you begin

* A [Zapier account](https://zapier.com/sign-up).
* An MCP client that supports the Model Context Protocol over Streamable HTTP. If your organization manages your MCP client, an admin or owner may need to approve the Zapier connector first.

## Connect with a connection token

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create a MCP server">
    * Go to [mcp.zapier.com](https://mcp.zapier.com).
    * Click **Add MCP server**.
    * Under **Choose your AI agent**, search for and select **Other**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Generate a connection token">
    * Select the <img src="https://cdn.zapier.com/storage/photos/baa5b3a64988a15f0dc8497c52ec257b.png" alt="link icon" noZoom style={{ display: "inline-block", width: "14px", margin: "0 0.15em", verticalAlign: "baseline" }} /> **Connect** tab.
    * Click **Generate token**.

    Copy your credentials and store them straight away. You can either copy the server URL, which now includes your token, or copy the token on its own from **Or manually copy the token**.

    The token is only shown once. If you lose it, click **Rotate token** to get a new one. The previous token stops working straight away, so update anywhere you used it.

    <Warning>
      Treat your connection token like a password. Anyone with the token, or with a server URL that contains it, can run tools on this server and access your data.
    </Warning>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the token to your MCP client">
    Your MCP client needs the token in one of two forms. Use whichever your MCP client supports.

    **Authorization header (recommended)**

    Point your MCP client at the connect URL:

    ```text theme={null}
    https://mcp.zapier.com/api/v1/connect
    ```

    Then add this header to your MCP client's configuration:

    ```text theme={null}
    Authorization: Bearer YOUR_CONNECTION_TOKEN
    ```

    **URL with token**

    Point your MCP client at the full server URL, with the token as a query parameter:

    ```text theme={null}
    https://mcp.zapier.com/api/v1/connect?token=YOUR_CONNECTION_TOKEN
    ```

    The <img src="https://cdn.zapier.com/storage/photos/baa5b3a64988a15f0dc8497c52ec257b.png" alt="link icon" noZoom style={{ display: "inline-block", width: "14px", margin: "0 0.15em", verticalAlign: "baseline" }} /> **Connect** tab shows this complete URL, ready to copy.
  </Step>
</Steps>

You've now connected your MCP client to Zapier MCP.

## Regenerate a token

If your token is exposed, or you need to invalidate the current one:

1. Go to [mcp.zapier.com](https://mcp.zapier.com) and select your server.
2. Select the <img src="https://cdn.zapier.com/storage/photos/baa5b3a64988a15f0dc8497c52ec257b.png" alt="link icon" noZoom style={{ display: "inline-block", width: "14px", margin: "0 0.15em", verticalAlign: "baseline" }} /> **Connect** tab.
3. Click **Rotate token**.
4. Copy and store the new token immediately. It is only visible once.

Rotating the token immediately invalidates the previous one. Any MCP clients using the previous token stop working until you update their configuration.
